At around 12:24 AM on April 4, 2026, Officer Super noted the underground garage door at the apartment complex at 617 8th Avenue Northwest, New Brighton, Ramsey County was partially open. Officer Super decided to investigate said there had been numerous reports of underground garage burglaries in the area. Officer Super found Hassan Abdi Hired ([DOB redacted]) inside the underground garage trying to close the garage door. Hired provided a false name and claimed he lived at the address. Hired said he had been helping his aunt unload groceries from a vehicle.
Hired claimed he had been staying with his aunt Fatmo in Unit 128. The vehicle Hired claimed belonged to his aunt corresponded to Unit 313 and the owner was not named Fatmo. Hired claimed he had previously lived in Iowa and had never before had a government issued identification. Hired offered to take officers to his aunt’s apartment to verify he had been staying there, and officers took him up on his offer. In the apartment vestibule, Hired typed in 10128 and tried to get buzzed in, but there was no answer.
Officers eventually gained entry into the building and had Hired walked them to his aunt’s apartment. Hired took them to Unit 224. Hired barely knocked on the door several times, and he got no response. Officers arrested Hired. Officers searched Hired who said he had a weapon, a knife, and methamphetamine in his possession. Officers recovered a Walther 9mm handgun from Hired. Hired also had a black headlamp in a jacket pocket. Officers recovered a container of suspected methamphetamine and a folded piece of tinfoil in Hired’s possession.
Hired had a Chevrolet key with a dealer tag attached to it and a key fob for a Hyundai in his possession. Hired also had a purple American Express car in the name of CR in his possession. Officers also recovered a honey packet from Hired. Hired repeatedly asked officers if he could have fentanyl that they recovered from him. Hired vomited uncontrollably and began to slouch. Officers administered 2 doses of Narcan to Hired, and medics took him to Regions Hospital for medical care. Hired was identified at the hospital through his fingerprints, and officers discovered his warrants.
The contents of the container recovered from Hired tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine and weighed 0.56 grams. The contents of the tinfoil recovered from Hired tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine and weighed 0.13 grams. Surveillance video showed that a maroon Chrysler Pacifica with Minnesota license plates RWS479 pulled into the visitor parking lot at 617 8th Avenue NW at 11:11 PM on April 3, 2026. At 11:35 PM, a SUV pulled up to the complex’s main garage entrance.
The garage door opened, and the SUV entered. Hired got out of the Pacifica’s passenger seat and entered the open garage door. Hired approached a black Hyundai with Minnesota license plates TEM404. The Hyundai backed out of its spot and parked near the garage door. Hired got out and walked around the garage pulling door handles of other vehicles. Hired got back into the Pacifica and drove toward the garage door. The door opened. Hired got out and kicked the sensors on each side of the open door preventing the door from closing.
