On March 31, 2026, at 12:41 P.M., officers with the Richfield Police Department responded to a stabbing on the 7700 block of Chicago Ave S, in Richfield in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Dispatch advised the officers that the suspect had called 911 and stated that he had stabbed someone and he was in a grey Subaru. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the grey Subaru, and the suspect was identified as Rick Clayton Simmons [DOB REDACTED], Defendant herein. Defendant was taken into custody. A knife was located on his person in a search incident to arrest.
While he was being searched Defendant stated, "What was I supposed to do let him kill me?" Officers spoke with a witness who stated that she heard Defendant arguing with a person identified as R. J. S. By their cars. She then saw Defendant run at R. J. S. And made a stabbing motion toward R. J. S.’s abdomen. A second witness recounted a similar version of the stabbing from their vantage point. Officers spoke with Victim [NAME REDACTED]S. Who stated that he was vacuuming his car, and he noticed a vehicle stop in front of his.
Defendant was driving that vehicle and was yelling at him. He asked Defendant, “What the f*** is your problem?” and Defendant got out of his vehicle and rushed at him, stabbing him in the stomach. Victim [NAME REDACTED]S. Was taken to the hospital by ambulance. In a post Miranda statement, Defendant stated that Victim [NAME REDACTED]S. Had threatened him months prior. When he got out of his vehicle Victim [NAME REDACTED]S. Said something to him, he couldn’t hear exactly what was said but the tone was threatening.
Defendant stated that when he exited his vehicle and pulled out his knife Victim [NAME REDACTED]S. Threatened him again. He admitted to stabbing him one time in the abdomen. Defendant stated this was a bunch of “nigger head game s***” and went on to say that the black people in this neighborhood gang up on people they don’t like. He stated that he has never pulled a knife on someone before and then questioned “Why would someone threaten someone that’s pulled a knife on them?" Defendant is in custody on this charge.
