Count 1Fleeing a Peace Officer in a Motor VehicleTraffic
Probable Cause
On 3/10/2026 a Deputy with the Anoka County Sheriff's Office was traveling on Lake George Blvd NW in the City of Oak Grove in the County of Anoka when he observed the headlights of a vehicle in the ditch on the western side of the road. A truck was attempting to exit the ditch at a high rate of speed. The Deputy took a U-turn and began to observe the vehicle which had exited the ditch. Sparks were flying from the rear of the vehicle, and it had turned off its headlights. The truck swerved off the road and almost into the ditch again, before turning sharply into the center of the road.
The Deputy activated his emergency lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle did not stop, it turned and accelerated to approximately 50 mph. The vehicle continued on for several minutes until it arrived at a residence and pulled into the driveway. There the Deputy was able to take the driver into custody. The driver was determined to be Daniel Thomas Helriegel [DOB REDACTED], herein Defendant. The Deputy noted the odor of alcohol and Defendant's impaired balance and motor function.
Defendant's speech was slurred and he was unable to remember parts of conversation that had happened moments before. Defendant reported being short of breath and was transported to Mercy Hospital, where a Blood Draw search warrant was applied for, approved, and drawn.
