On July 5, 2025, Minneapolis Police responded to a shooting in the Popeye's parking lot on Lake Street and Pleasant within the city of Minneapolis, Hennepin county. Upon arrival officers located approximately 7or 8, 9mm discharged cartridge casings on the sidewalk and separate casings from rifle rounds in the parking lot. INVOLVED Officers located an adult male at the hospital with gunshot wounds. Investigators went to speak with victim, ADDE. MOHAMED AWEIS [DOB REDACTED], herein after "Defendant". Officers learned Defendant had arrived at the hospital wearing a black hoodie and black pants, and shoes which were black with red in the middle.
Defendant had a gunshot wound to his left cheek, and a gunshot wound to his abdomen that may have hit his small intestine. Defendant's injuries were critical, but he was stable. Defendant was driven to the hospital in a red Prius with MN plate REM030 by Witness 1. A second Victim [NAME REDACTED] at the hospital with a puncture wound to his upper right leg. He arrived there by Witness 2 in a gray Toyota Camry with MN plate GGM032 that had its back window broken. Victim 2 described to investigators he had gotten food and was sitting on the hood of the Camry in the Popeye's parking lot.
The Camry was parked in a spot that backed up to Pleasant Avenue. Witness 2 was sitting on the hood of the Camry with him. They were laughing and eating food. Victim 2 heard multiple gunshots which he believed came from at least two firearms, because it sounded like the gunshots were on either side of him. He did not see either shooter because he ducked down behind the Camry. While ducking behind the vehicle, he felt a pain in his leg and thought he had been shot. Edina Police stopped with a red Chevrolet Cruz with MN plate LCA397 that was parked on the side of the road within the city of Edina with a flat tire and damage from gunfire.
The vehicle was occupied by four males, all identified and indicated they were shot at while in Minneapolis near Popeye's. VIDEO Investigators reviewed preliminary Milestone video from Lake and Pleasant which showed a large group of males in the Popeye's parking lot. The group of males appear to react to an unknown disturbance and begin running away from the area into the street. A male, later identified as Defendant, is then seen firing what appears to be a handgun multiple times from the sidewalk in front of Popeye's into the parking lot.
The Defendant then appears to be injured, and bends over, holding his stomach. Defendant then runs into the parking lot and out of view of the camera. Multiple vehicles are then seen leaving the parking lot and going in different directions. Investigators also obtained surveillance video from the Popeye's business. At approximately 2:20AM a group of people are in the parking lot of Popeyes Louisiana Chicken. The group is gathered around several vehicles that are parked along the eastern side of the parking lot, backing Pleasant Avenue.
