On March 5, 2026, Officers were dispatched to 485 98th Lane, in the city of Coon Rapids, Anoka County, Minnesota, to investigate a domestic altercation. 911 notes indicated that caller reported that her parents were physically fighting and heard a commotion upstairs. As Officer Giese arrived in the area, a vehicle pulled up alongside his marked Squad car, and he heard a woman crying and requesting help. The driver, fully identified as Y. Z. M-J. [DOB REDACTED], was not wearing a shirt. She said that her husband, later fully identified as Dequawn Isaiah Joyce, [DOB REDACTED], hereinafter the Defendant, had ripped it off.
The Officer observed several signs of a struggle, her bra was turned to the side, she appeared to be wincing in pain, had blood underneath her nose, and coming from her left ear. Y. Z. M-J. Was distraught, and it was difficult to calm her. She told Officer Giese that she found out that the Defendant had been cheating on her. She confronted him about it and told him to leave their home. He began yelling at her and told her to “leave me the F*** alone.” Then attacked her. She tried to run out of the bedroom, but he tackled her to the ground.
He struck her in the side of the head and ripped off her shirt. As they struggled, he put his hand over her nose and mouth making it difficult for her to breathe. Y. Z. M-J. Told Officer Giese that it felt like she was going to lose consciousness. She was able to struggle free and flee the home. Y. Z. M-J. Confirmed that she and the Defendant have been married for 18 years. Because of her injuries she was transported to Mercy Hospital for evaluation, where Officers obtained a recorded statement from her about the assault, and photographed her injuries.
Police also spoke with the 911 caller, Z. S-L. J. ([DOB REDACTED]), Y. Z. M-J.’s daughter. She told police that she heard the assault but did not witness it.
