On September 5, 2025, Minneapolis police were alerted and dispatched to a stabbing downtown on 8th Street South within Minneapolis, Hennepin County. Officers were advised one Victim, Victim 1, had been struck in the head and hands with a machete and another Victim, Victim 2, was threatened by the suspect with the machete. Victim 1 described being hit 5 times in the head and hands by a machete. Upon arrival, officers met with the Victims and security. Officers were pointed to the suspect around the corner, who was later identified as SHAWN COATES [DOB REDACTED], hereinafter Defendant.
Defendant was taken into custody. In a search of his person, officers located a large machete style knife from Defendant's pants. Defendant refused to get into a squad car on his own, so he was lifted and placed in by multiple officers. Also, at times, he refused to walk on his own and needed to be carried. Defendant was agitated, attempted to pull away from the grasp of the officer holding onto his arm, and was not listening to simple commands. Defendant's eyes appeared glassy, bloodshot, and watery.
He also appeared to have a hard time standing upright. Defendant has a previous criminal conviction for Threats of Violence from a January 2022 incident involving driving his truck into a Minneapolis Fire station in Hennepin County court file 27-CR-22-450 and remains on probation for the same. Defendant is not in custody and his whereabouts are unknown. Based on the seriousness of this case and the possible penalties attached, a warrant is requested to address bail and conditions necessary to protect the public safety and ensure Defendant's reappearance.
