RUSSELL made several statements about not doing anything wrong and that he just got into an argument with the guard. The officer noted that RUSSELL had an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person. Following a Miranda advisory, RUSSELL told police that he got out of treatment in October and was having a cookout the next day, so he went to Cub Foods to get supplies. RUSSELL said he arrived with a friend, although he would not provide information about his friend. RUSSELL reported that when he got to the checkout, he asked the cashier for assistance retrieving an item and set his bag on the conveyor belt.
RUSSELL made a grievance with the employee because no one was bagging groceries like they used to do. RUSSELL said the cashier told him that they do not bag groceries anymore, and that made him upset. RUSSELL stated that he handed his credit card to the cashier and began bagging his own groceries. When he went to leave, RUSSELL said the cashier told him that the payment did not go through then the security guard accused him of stealing. RUSSELL reported that he got into a verbal argument with the 2 62-CR-26-2707 Filed in District Court State of Minnesota 4/20/2026 security guard and set his bags down to allow security to escort him out, but then he came back to inquire about his credit card that he left behind.
RUSSELL said he was informed that he did not leave a credit card. RUSSELL reported that he was angry, so he walked over to AutoZone to call his cousin to “pull up.” RUSSELL then told police that he did not hand his credit card to the cashier but instead swiped ApplePay on his phone, but it must not have gone through. RUSSELL said he went to AutoZone to use their phone to call his cousin to see if his Cub Foods payment went through. When police confirmed with AutoZone staff that RUSSELL tried to steal there, RUSSELL admitted that he went in AutoZone and tried to steal some lights, but staff called him out on it, so he put everything on the counter then called his cousin.
