On December 6, 2025, at approximately 9:24 P.M., Prior Lake Police Officers Dustin Hatzenbeller and Robert Heard were dispatched to a report of a 911 hangup, which occurred at the 5700 block of Shannon Trail, in the city of Prior Lake, Scott County, Minnesota. While responding to the call, officers received the following updates from dispatch: There was an open 911 phone call. Yelling was heard in the background. There was no answer upon callback. On the second callback, a female answered and stated it was accidental.
The female caller denied there being yelling. Officers Hatzenbeller and Heard arrived at the residence at approximately 9:32 P.M. And spoke with the individual who called 911, an adult female (fully identified in law enforcement reports and hereinafter referred to as "Witness") at the front door of the residence. Officers learned through Witness, and another adult male (fully identified in law enforcement reports and hereinafter referred to as "Witness 2") that both individuals explained there was an altercation of some sort involving multiple individuals that allegedly left the residence.
Officers were invited inside the home due to the cold winter conditions outside. Officers stood in the entryway of the home and began to get more details from Witness and Witness 2 regarding the altercation. Witness did not provide much information; however, Witness 2 did gesture downstairs towards the basement when asked if anyone else was in the home. As Officers were collecting more information, Officer Hatzenbeller observed a male sitting down motionless and covered in blood in the lower level of the home.
Officer Hatzenbeller noted in his reports that he was able to make this observation in plain view from the entryway. The individual sitting motionless in the basement (fully identified in law enforcement reports and hereinafter referred to as "Victim") male was covered in a copious amount of blood on his face and on the front of his clothing. It appeared to be a medical emergency, as Victim showed signs of severe medical trauma (heavy bleeding from the face, unconscious, and right eye swollen), prompting Officers to walk down the stairs to the lower level.
As Officers entered the lower level, they observed a large amount of blood on the carpet, the walls, and other surrounding areas. Victim had a swollen-shut left eye and fresh facial injuries consistent with an assault. Victim's shirt was covered in blood. In speaking with Victim, Witness, and Witness 2, it was learned that Victim got into a fight with Francisco Javier Mendoza Hernandez, [DOB REDACTED] (hereinafter "DEFENDANT"). Victim and Witness both explained that Witness had invited both Victim and DEFENDANT over to party at Witness's house.
Victim and DEFENDANT were friends and had known each other for several years. While there is a discrepancy between Victim [NAME REDACTED] who started the altercation, DEFENDANT escalated the argument and repeatedly hit Victim [NAME REDACTED], causing extreme injuries to Victim. DEFENDANT repeatedly struck Victim, while Victim and Witness were telling DEFENDANT to stop. After beating Victim, DEFENDANT left the home and received a ride from another individual who was at the home during the incident (fully identified in law enforcement reports and hereinafter referred to as "Witness 3"). Officer Hatzenbeller spoke with Witness 3 over the phone.
