Officer Cargill responded to 1406 2nd Ave S and Sergeant Lillehei responded to [ADDRESS REDACTED]. Upon arrival, Off.
Cargill spoke with Shane Hafften, who stated that his sister, Joellyn Hafften Hossain, is a vulnerable adult, and he feels that her fiancé, Matt Joseph Fadden, [DOB REDACTED], hereinafter the defendant, has been taking advantage of her. Hafften claimed that the defendant is taking all her money by withdrawing from Joellyn’s checking account and putting it into his account. Hafften stated that he came here today, wanting to talk to the defendant about the situation. The defendant was walking away and Hafften followed him, at which time the defendant pulled a sword on him.
Hafften stated that he was approximately 2-3 feet away from the tip of the sword when the defendant threatened him with it. Hafften responded by asking "did you just threaten me with a sword?" at which time the defendant put it away. Hafften stated that when he arrived at the apartment tonight both the defendant and Joellyn were present. After speaking with Hafften, Off. Cargill went inside of the apartment and Hafften showed him where the incident occurred. Off. Cargill observed a large samurai sword in the bedroom on the floor to the right of the bed.
He took off the sheath and observed it was very sharp. Off. Cargill noted that when he took off the sheath, it did not come off easily and he had to use some strength to remove it. He then spoke with Joellyn, who stated that she saw the two men arguing, and saw the defendant pull the big knife out on Hafften. Joellyn stated that Hafften backed away and said he just wanted to talk. But the defendant still had the knife out of the sheath and was pointing it at him. Joellyn stated that the defendant’s facial expression was mad.
She stated that the defendant is very verbally abusive towards her, and she has been telling him he doesn't need to talk to her like that and that he makes her feel horrible. Off. Cargill cleared that scene and responded to [ADDRESS REDACTED] where Sergeant Lillehei and the defendant were. While speaking with the defendant, he stated that he and Joellyn have been together for 14 years. He stated that he was going to go to bed when Joellyn said Hafften was coming over. He stated that he “just grabbed the sword because he was coming down the hall.” The defendant stated that the sheath fell off, he picked it up and put it all back together.
