On December 5, 2025, at approximately 9:40 P.M., Saint Paul Officers were dispatched to a domestic call with limited information on the 1300 block of Westminster Street, Saint Paul, County of Ramsey. The caller said someone put hands on caller’s youngest child. Officers arrived and observed a male and a young female yelling at each other outside. The male was identified as KARL LEWIS MCKENZIE, [DOB REDACTED]. MCKENZIE was shirtless, had scratches on his chest, and had a smell of alcohol. MCKENZIE said he and the juvenile female (J1) were involved in a verbal altercation about the female (J1) not cleaning after herself.
His girlfriend, DJD (J1’s mother), told him he could speak to J1 as if she was his daughter. While he argued with J1, DJD entered the room and got in his face. He and DJD argued and got into a physical altercation. The scratches on his neck were from DJD. MCKENZIE admitted hitting DJD. MCKENZIE’s brother, GM, entered the vestibule and said police were not needed. MCKENZIE blocked the entry door and prevented officers from entering the apartment. GM also interfered with officers and was detained. Officers grabbed MCKENZIE’s arms and handcuffed him.
He did not cooperate with commands to walk, was taken to the ground. MCKENZIE was carried, and eventually placed inside a squad car. As officers escorted MCKENZIE outside, he wrapped his legs around Officer Wells left leg. Officer Wells pushed MCKENZIE’s face/neck area, taking MCKENZIE off balance. MCKENZIE fell into the snow and Officer Wells fell on him. MCKENZIE continued to apply pressure to Officer Wells leg. Eventually, Officer Wells was able to get out of MCKENZIE’s leg lock. At the apartment, a juvenile female answered the door.
A female inside the apartment told the juvenile female not to speak to officers. SNM spoke to police. SNM said MCKENZIE put his hands on her siblings, who are not his biological children. SNM said MCKENZIE said he was going to kill her mother and her father. DJD had significant swelling on the right side of her face, bruises on her left cheek, scratches on her left shoulder and arm. DJD said she and the father of her children, MCKENZIE, had a verbal argument. She said she could not remember what the argument was about.
MCKENZIE went to play with the kids. DJD said she and MCKENZIE just pushed each other. He did not punch her. DJD said when MCKENZIE pushed her, she hit the wall. When asked how she received her injuries, DJD said she has a medical condition that causes her to lose her balance. Regarding the bump on her forehead, DJD said he bumped her face on the doorway. Regarding the bruise on her left cheek, DJD said she hit herself on the counter during the argument. DJD said she did not want to press charges.
