On April 14, 2026, officers were dispatched to an apartment building located in Edina, Hennepin County, Minnesota, based on a report of a domestic assault. Officers arrived and made contact with the reporting party, who stated that her daughter (an adult female identified herein as “Victim”) had been assaulted by her boyfriend, FRANKLIN GEOVANNY PEREIRA-SORTO [DOB REDACTED], hereinafter Defendant. The reporting party stated that the assault happened in Defendant’s apartment, which is in the same building.
Officers immediately observed that Victim appeared to have been severely beaten. She had fresh swelling on her forehead with purple bruising, blood was dripping from her left ear, and her nose and lips were swollen to the point where she had trouble speaking. Victim’s eyes were both swollen shut. Officers went to Defendant’s apartment, where they informed him that he was under arrest and instructed him to exit the apartment. Defendant complied and he was arrested. Officers saw that Defendant’s knuckles had cuts on them, and there was dried blood on his hands and shorts.
Victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for her injuries. She provided a statement to police at the hospital. She has been in a romantic relationship with Defendant for a year. She lives with her mother in her apartment, and Defendant lives in the same building. That day, she was hanging out in Defendant’s apartment, and they had been drinking alcohol together. She confronted Defendant about some texts she saw on his phone. She then tried to leave his apartment, but he blocked her path. She recalled that he slapped her, and that she ended up on her back on the floor but did not know how she had gotten there.
Defendant got on top of her and started punching her in the face and head with both of his fists. He paused and told her, “You know you are going to die today,” before laughing and continuing to punch her. She begged him to let her go and he continued to punch her. At one point during the assault, he pushed a burning cigarette against her left arm, causing a burn. Victim tried kicking Defendant off of her, and she was scared Defendant was going to kill her. Victim was eventually able to flee back to her mother’s apartment, where her mother called 911. An officer also spoke to Defendant.
Defendant stated that he is under a doctor’s care for his mental health and that he took his medication as prescribed that morning. He admitted that he was romantically involved with the victim, [NAME REDACTED] had been drinking together that day. They got into an argument because he had been flirting with another woman via text. Defendant then stated he blacked out and was vague on providing details about the assault. He admitted that he punched Victim [NAME REDACTED] did not know how many times.
