On March 22, 2026, at 10:07 A.M., Deputy Workman with the Washington County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to 275 Red Rock Crossing in the city of Newport, Washington County, regarding a burglary alarm going off. The building is a new apartment complex that is currently under construction. Dispatch advised that the suspect was a male wearing a black jacket and dark pants, who was seen attempting to gain access to a locked trailer on site and then walking around one of the buildings. Upon arrival Deputy Workman noted that the fence surrounding the construction site was secured but had a gap large enough for someone to slip through.
Deputy Workman searched the area and noted fresh footprints that appeared to have been made by an athletic sneaker. Deputy Workman followed the footprints into one of the buildings, where he and another deputy ultimately located a male wearing a black jacket and dark-colored pants. The male was identified as DAVID WILLIAM NICHOLS, [DOB REDACTED]. During a search of NICHOLS' person, deputies located items in his jacket that appeared to have been taken from the construction site, such as DeWalt batteries, screw bits, various tools, cords, and keys.
Deputies reviewed surveillance footage from the building and noted that the suspect seen attempting to enter a trailer and walking towards the building where NICHOLS was located matched NICHOLS. NICHOLS stated that he was just trespassing and is usually told to leave. He also mentioned that he is on conditional release in Hennepin and Ramsey counties and cannot be charged with new offenses. NICHOLS was transported to the Washington County Jail where he remains in custody. NICHOLS currently has a 3rd Degree Burglary pending in Hennepin County, Threats of Violence and Domestic Assault charges pending in Ramsey County, and several open misdemeanor cases.
