At 5:14 PM on November 13, 2025, officers were sent to the intersection of St. Anthony Avenue and Aldine Street, St. Paul, Ramsey County on a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian. Officers found AD ([DOB redacted]) to the west of the crosswalk with labored breathing and a compound fracture to her right leg. Officers applied a tourniquet to AD’s right leg. AD was transported to the hospital where she was pronounced dead at 5:58 PM. AD’s husband, CD, spoke to officers. CD said he and AD were walking their two German Shepherds.
They entered the crosswalk heading north towards University Avenue. The crosswalk where CD and AD were crossing was immediately after the stop sign. A black SUV travelling west on St. Anthony Avenue approached the stop sign at the intersection and slowed, but it did not stop completely. The SUV accelerated through the intersection and hit AD and their two dogs. The SUV did not stop after hitting AD. The couple’s two dogs were later found and taken home. Officers found a plastic piece the SUV hitting AD left behind at the scene.
The piece was associated with a 2007-2014 Chevrolet. Officers noted that the sun had set at the time of the crash, but there was sufficient light to see clearly. The streetlight at the intersection was on, and the area was well lit. Officers found a lime- green leash at the scene. Officers spoke to a woman who was driving directly behind the black SUV on St. Anthony Avenue. The woman saw a man and woman walking two dogs heading north from the footbridge at Aldine Street where the stop sign is. The woman saw the couple and their dogs enter the crosswalk before the SUV reached the intersection.
The woman said the SUV came to a partial stop at the intersection. The woman started honking, but the SUV did not stop. The SUV ran AD over like a speedbump and continued driving west on St. Anthony Avenue. Officers found surveillance video that showed the SUV traveling in the area. Surveillance video captured the sounds from the crash: a thud, honking, high-pitched screaming, and a vehicle accelerating at a high rate of speed with a revving engine. Officers were able to determine the SUV was a Chevrolet Suburban bearing Minnesota license plates PEX559. The Suburban is registered to MICHAEL KENTRELL SMITH ([DOB redacted]). Surveillance from Speedway at [address omitted] North showed Smith pulled in at 5:14 PM on November 13, 2025 according to the video’s time setting.
Smith got out and briefly examined his Suburban before entering the store. On November 15, 2025, Smith was arrested driving the Suburban. Smith was arrested wearing the same clothes he wore in the surveillance video at the Speedway after the crash. Smith’s Suburban was missing a piece near its front passenger tire that corresponded to the piece left behind at the scene of the crash. Smith was advised of his constitutional rights and agreed to speak with investigators about a hit-and-run that occurred on November 13, 2025. Smith said he was comfortable talking since he wasn’t involved in a hit-and-run accident.
