He told officers that he was at the State Fair with his friends MHA, MNA, and ZAA. They then drove to the Stone Arch Bridge and had been there for approximately 30-40 minutes before the shooting occurred. Victim 1 stated that he was walking with his friends when a Somali Male 6’2 to 6’3 wearing a gray Nike Tech Sweater, black pants, and Black Balaclava walked past them and exchanged words. The male was with 3-4 Somali females as he walked by Victim 1’s friends. When Victim 1 looked over his shoulder, the male pulled a black semi-automatic handgun out of his waistband and started shooting at him and his friends.
Victim 1 stated that he started running and felt pain in his foot. He then noticed he had been shot at the top of the foot. MHA, MNA, and ZAA claimed they didn’t know Defendant and were not with him or his friends. Officers with the University of Minnesota also arrested YHM shortly after the call of the shooting near a garage in Dinkytown because he matched the description of one of the shooters. A witness also identified YHM as one of the shooters.
