On May 9, 2026, at about 7:13 A.M., Edina Police were dispatched to the area of France Avenue and 50th Street in Edina, Hennepin County, because someone crashed into a garbage receptacle with their vehicle and the left on foot. The driver was observed getting onto a Metro Transit Bus traveling southbound, and he was described as having longer hair and wearing a t-shirt with a guitar on his back. Officers stopped the Metro Transit Bus and a person matching this description exited the bus right away, explaining that he didn't know what to do.
This individual was identified as KEVIN LOUIS BRENDEMUEHL [DOB REDACTED], Defendant herein. Officers observed that Defendant was looking around, appeared fidgety, and attempted to look for his driver's license again after already giving it to officers. Defendant's hands were shaky and moving constantly, and his eyes were bloodshot. Officers asked about the crash and Defendant stated he "was just driving and hit the thing." Officers conducted standard field-sobriety tests based on their observations of indicia of impairment and Defendant having just crashed his vehicle.
Defendant exhibited the following clues of impairment: lack of smooth pursuit in both eyes, horizontal and vertical gaze nystagmus, twitching, losing balance, failing to correctly follow instructions, and hopping. Defendant was placed in custody for DWI, and in a search of his backpack, officers recovered 0.22 grams of field-test-positive methamphetamine and several smoking pipes, plus several prescription medications. A blood draw pursuant to a signed search warrant, and the sample was sent to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). The results of the testing show that Defendant had amphetamine and methamphetamine in his system.
Officers observed the accident scene and noted that Defendant's vehicle had collided with a light pole, a garbage receptacle, and a tree. There was damage to all three of these objects. The garbage receptacle was struck with enough force that the anchor bolts on the bottom were broken, and the receptacle deflected into the building directly to the west, causing significant damage to that building. The total estimated cost to repair the damage to the building is $19,612.16. Defendant has a prior conviction for Fifth Degree Drug Possession in Court File No. ••-CR-24-••• from January 30, 2024, and he has a prior impaired driving-related loss of license under Minn.
Stat. 171.177 from a DWI arrest on May 11, 2020. Defendant is not currently in custody. Given the safety risk presented by driving while impaired, and Defendant's history of failing to abide by conditions of release, the State is respectfully requesting that this Complaint be issued as a warrant.
