On September 29, 2025, Officer Nicholas Salvevold of the Breezy Point Police Department received a voicemail from DB (fully identified in the police reports). DB advised that he had previously reported that his 2000 Dodge Pickup had been taken. DB had made a previous report on September 11, 2025. DB reported that he had purchased a 2000 red Dodge Dakota from Donald Joel Aleman [DOB REDACTED]. At the time of the report on September 11, 2025, DB advised that he had allowed Aleman to continue driving the vehicle, but Aleman would not return it or answer his calls.
DB did not want to report it stolen at that time. Officer Salvevold called DB who reported that he bought the vehicle from Aleman because Aleman needed the money really bad. DB reported that he purchased the vehicle but never actually received it. DB reported that he purchased the vehicle approximately one month ago and gave Aleman $4,000 for the truck. The transaction occurred at DB's home located on Ski Chalet Drive, Breezy Point, Crow Wing County, Minnesota. DB confirmed the vehicle was a 2000 Dodge Dakota bearing Minnesota license plate [PLATE REDACTED]. DB advised he received the title for the vehicle and transferred it into his name.
A query of the vehicle confirmed that the vehicle was registered to DB. DB advised that when he called Aleman, Aleman was very apologetic and advised that he needed the truck so he could work to make money to pay DB back. DB advised that the first couple of times he was okay with it. But Aleman stopped responding for close to a month and did not respond to DB's calls at all. DB had asked Aleman to return the vehicle multiple times. DB advised he wanted to report his truck as stolen. Officer Salvevold attempted to call Aleman.
All known phone numbers for Aleman either did not work or did not accept calls. Officer Salvevold had DB sign a stolen vehicle form which was entered into the National Crime Information Center. Shortly after submission to NCIC, the vehicle was located by the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office. Deputy Powell from the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office advised Officer Salvevold that Aleman was the driver. Deputy Powell advised that Aleman admitted to knowing that DB wanted the vehicle back, but advised the vehicle was having issues and he wished to fix them prior to returning the vehicle.
Officer Salvevold noted that Aleman had been previously convicted of motor vehicle theft in 2021. (BPD ICR#21016741.) The previous case involved similar circumstances involving Aleman advising a friend that he would fix her vehicle but then did not return it. See Court File ••-CR-••-••••.
