On May 8, 2026, at approximately 3:01 P.M., police responded to [ADDRESS REDACTED], St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. Initially, the call was dispatched as a 911 hangup where the complainant provided the address and asked for police before hanging up. Another caller reported that a male pointed a gun at her and her mom. Another person called to report that their son had a gun but was only trying to protect her. When police arrived on scene, a female, CAP, was standing on the steps yelling that the suspect, later identified as DANIEL LEE VADNAIS – [DOB REDACTED], was in the basement.
CAP and her mother, GP, complied with directives to walk away from the house and cross the street. Police began clearing the residence, and additional people came outside. CAP pointed at a female, LAN, and yelled that her son was the one who pulled the gun. LAN yelled back that she was lying. VADNAIS’s mother, LAN, told police that everything was fine, that CAP was the issue, and her son was in the basement. LAN told police that he did it to protect her and that he did not point a gun at CAP. Eventually, VADNAIS exited the residence and was detained.
VADNAIS was asked about reports that a firearm was pointed at someone. VADNAIS stated that CAP and his mother, LAN, were arguing, and CAP was being told to leave the residence. They continued arguing and threatening each other. VADNAIS stated that he screamed at CAP to leave and only threatened to beat her up if she assaulted his mother. CAP told police that her mother, GP, got into an argument with her roommate, LAN. LAN’s son, VADNAIS, came upstairs and began arguing with and threatening GP, so GP called her to come over.
When she arrived, CAP said she went inside and argued with VADNAIS in the kitchen. CAP reported that VADNAIS told her, “B****, I’ll shoot you right now,” then went downstairs to the basement. CAP told police that when VADNAIS came back, he was holding a rifle and pointed it at CAP and GP’s faces. CAP called police, and VADNAIS ran back down to the basement. CAP reported that she was approximately five to six feet away from VADNAIS when he pointed the rifle at her. GP told police that LAN got into an argument with another roommate, ESP. GP said the verbal argument got loud, and LAN’s son, VADNAIS, who lives in the basement, came upstairs and began threatening everyone.
GP stated that she called 911 then tried to cancel the call. GP then called her daughter, CAP, to make her aware of the situation. When CAP arrived at the residence, GP said the verbal altercation continued to progress then VADNAIS went downstairs and returned with a rifle. GP reported that VADNAIS pointed the firearm at her and CAP and told them that he was going to shoot them. GP stated that she grabbed the barrel of the firearm, but VADNAIS pulled it back, and GP disengaged. GP reported that VADNAIS turned around and waived the firearm at the other residents before going back down to the basement.
