On or about April 17, 2026, Moorhead police officers were dispatched to the area of 1102 3rd Street South in Moorhead, MN regarding multiple gunshots being fired from that residence. The caller provided information that they observed a suspect, known to them as MALACHI ALEXANDER SHABAIASH, [DOB REDACTED], hereafter, "Defendant," run back into the residence after hearing the gunfire. Detective Secord had been assigned to the case and came to the address location. Once there, Detective Secord was briefed regarding the current situation.
Moorhead police officers provided information that they had arrived at the residence and made contact with Defendant. Defendant had briefly exited the back door of the residence, on the East side of the house. Defendant was unarmed at that time, but as officers made verbal contact with Defendant, he fled back into the residence. Defendant then exited the residence out of a door on the West side of the residence, carrying a rifle in his hands. Defendant fled on foot and began running through yards in the immediate vicinity.
Defendant was later located in the back yard of a home on 4th Street and taken into custody. A safety sweep was completed of the home at 1102 3rd Street South and no other people or victims were located within the residence. Located in the residence was a semi-automatic rifle, found outside the residence on the deck on the West side of the residence. Additionally, a revolver-style pistol was located on the floor of the residence near the East side door. Numerous weapons were later located and inventoried based on a search warrant that included a Smith and Wesson 357 revolver, a Canik 9mm semi-automatic handgun and a Model 1873.45 caliber Colt revolver.
Additionally, five rounds of live ammunition were located in the Colt revolver and four.45 caliber long Colt shell casings were located in the home. While Detective Secord was completing the collection and inventory of evidence located at the residence and individual identified as JMC, hereafter "Victim," drove up to the residence. Victim [NAME REDACTED] at the residence with Defendant. Victim stated that he and Defendant had an on-and-off romantic relationship. Victim [NAME REDACTED] had spent the day at his parents' home doing laundry while Defendant babysat Defendant's sister's children.
Victim [NAME REDACTED] had remained with his sister when she returned home, that had consumed alcohol and Defendant had become extremely intoxicated. Victim [NAME REDACTED] had gone to the sister's residence and picked up Defendant. Victim [NAME REDACTED] was extremely intoxicated and agitated and that Defendant yelled at victim [NAME REDACTED]. Victim stated that Defendant's level of intoxication was such that he could not understand what Defendant was saying or the reason for his anger. Victim [NAME REDACTED] once they arrived home, Defendant began to exit the vehicle but threw a Zippo lighter against the dashboard, causing it to break into pieces.
