Police were able to associate NEWTON with a Mercedes SUV registered to a female with the initials S. W. Records revealed that S. W. Resided at an apartment in a different building on Crystal Lake next to the boat launch. Police went to this apartment building to review surveillance video. Apartment management staff were familiar with NEWTON and knew him to reside with S. W. Surveillance video showed NEWTON getting into the elevator at 7:12 A.M. On January 1st wearing the same clothing from the other apartment building.
The Mercedes SUV then left the underground parking garage at 7:14 A.M. The SUV returned at 8:22 A.M., and at 8:23 A.M., NEWTON exited the elevator wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, gray pants, black tennis shoes, and black hair cap. He appeared to be carrying a piece of gray colored clothing. On January 3, 2026, police administered a photo lineup to Victim. Victim did not pick NEWTON out of the lineup, however, she went through it three times and showed interest in NEWTON’s photo, although she believed the eyes of NEWTON looked different than she recalled.
The only known photograph of NEWTON that police had available was from May of 2024, and NEWTON’s face was slimmer and he had a shoulder-length hairstyle at the time. Police obtained a search warrant for S. W.’s apartment, where they believed NEWTON was residing. On January 5, 2026, officers surveilled the apartment building, when they saw the Mercedes SUV exit the underground parking garage. Officers followed the vehicle and confirmed NEWTON was the driver, at which point they stopped the SUV and arrested NEWTON.
