They waited to collect payment on Friday at a place in Crystal, Minnesota. PETERSON did not have Johnson’s contact information in the phone she had, and said it was on her iPhone at home. PETERSON said she did not know about the check because Johnson did not want to make it out to her because the car was in MELLSTROM’s name. MELLSTROM spoke to Investigator Shaffer on April 6th. He said he lives in Arizona, but has been back for a few weeks and living at his house in White Bear Township. PETERSON has been living at his residence for about a year.
She was kicked out of her residence. He and PETERSON met in 2018 when he was driving for Uber, and have been friends since that time. They are not in a romantic relationship. He received the check from PETERSON who told him it was payment for a car he was selling. PETERSON was waiting in the car with her daughter while he was cashing the check. 2 62-CR-26-2372 Filed in District Court State of Minnesota 4/8/2026 After a Miranda advisory, PETERSON spoke to Investigator Shaffer. She has known MELLSTROM since 2028. She was in a relationship with him, but not a romantic relationship.
A couple of months ago, she got into an accident while she was driving a Chevrolet Traverse that is in MELLSTROM’s name. Another vehicle swiped her. The vehicle was still drivable, but the other driver-Hakeem Johnson- did not want to go through insurance. MELLSTROM was in Arizona, and she was trying to take care of it. She had been calling and communicating with the other driver. She got estimates for the damage at multiple places and was told it would cost $20,000. Johnson would not pay that amount and the vehicle was in storage.
Johnson agreed to pay the storage fees and would give her a check. She drove to pick up the check somewhere around Crystal. They went around trying to cash the check.
