Kristyle Sherrell Peterson

On April 6, 2026, at 3:17 P.M., Ramsey County deputies responded to Security Bank & Trust, [ADDRESS REDACTED], White Bear Township, County of Ramsey, on a male trying to cash a fraudulent check. The check was made out in the amount of $2, 741.03, on the account of Wazata Boys Basketball Association, written out to DAVID MELLSTROM (fully identified later as DAVID OWEN MELLSTROM, [DOB REDACTED]). Deputy Paul made contact with MELLSTROM and Bank Manager SN. SN said the check was fraudulent. ML was the signer on the account.

ML is the President and treasurer of the Wayzata Boys Basketball Association. SN said before cashing the check, they called ML to verify the check and were told the check was fraudulent. ML reported last summer, the Plymouth Police executed a search warrant at a residence in Plymouth. During the search, they found a stack of Wayzata Boys Basketball Association checks. ML said the check number and date match a check that he sent out on March 9th originally for $231. ML does not know MELLSTROM and the check does not belong to him.

MELLSTROM said the check was given to him for money owned in relation to a vehicle that someone was buying from him. The check was given to him by his girlfriend who was out in the car waiting for him. Deputy Paul went outside and met KRISTYLE SHERRELL PETERSON, [DOB REDACTED], who was seated in a vehicle that registered to MELLSTROM. PETERSON said she was not MELLSTROM’s girlfriend, but just a friend. She said the check had been given to them by someone named “Hakeem” for damages done to a vehicle.

MELLSTROM said while he was in Arizona, his girlfriend, PETERSON, told him she wanted to sell his car- a Volkswagen Passat, because it was just sitting around. He said okay and let her handle it. The deal was done on March 9th, and they received the first check for the car on Friday, April 3, 2026. PETERSON took the check to him, but the banks were closed because it was a holiday. He tried to cash the check at several places. Someone at the bank told him they could not cash the check because it looked fraudulent.

He continued to try to cash the check at other locations because he did not want to be out his money for the car. MELLSTROM later said the bank told him they were not able to process the check because of the value. MELLSTROM pointed to the car in the parking lot and said his girlfriend was seated in the car. When asked for his girlfriend’s name, MELLSTROM hesitated for seconds, and then said her name is Krissy. PETERSON said a few months prior, she was driving the car-2020 Chevrolet Traverse- when she was crashed by a man named Hakeem Johnson.

Johnson said he did not want to report the accident to his insurance and wanted to pay for the damage in cash. She took the car to Walser Collision and Glass in Plymouth, and received an estimate for $20, 069.60. PETERSON showed Deputy Lydon an invoice on her phone. Johnson did not want to pay that amount, and decided to buy the car for about $8,000. The repair shops charged her storage fees. PETERSON said she put the repair shop in contact with Johnson so he could pay them and have the car towed.
