On April 18, 2025, Minneapolis police were alerted to a shooting near the intersection of 9th Street and 3rd Avenue South within downtown Minneapolis, Hennepin County. Upon arrival, officers located a blue Mazda sedan with obvious front-end damage, airbags deployed, and the sole occupant driver, Victim, had an obvious gunshot wound to the head. Victim's driver's side door had suspected bullet hole damage. Victim was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center and later pronounced deceased. When officers approached Victim, they located a.45 caliber ACP Glock style firearm between Victim's legs.
The bottom portion of the firearm appeared to be made from a 3D printed material. At the scene, officers located and collected 5 discharged cartridge casings, all of 9mm caliber. During later firearms evaluation, 4 of the DCCs were determined to be fired from the same firearm. The 5th casing is believed to be a possible anomaly in this investigation. Forensic scientists learned the Victim's.45 caliber firearm was inoperable. Investigators collected numerous surveillance video and street video angles of an interaction between the Victim vehicle and a Toyota Camry later learned to be driven by MOHAMED ABDI MOHAMED [DOB REDACTED], hereinafter "Defendant". SURVEILLANCE VIDEO In a review of surveillance video, investigators observed the Victim vehicle (Mazda) parking on the south side of 6th Street, across from Lyons Pub, underneath the City Center skyway.
Moments later, the Defendant arrived (Toyota) and parked in a meter behind the Victim's vehicle. The camera captured movement, as there was a person in the front passenger seat of the Victim's Mazda, later identified as Victim. The driver of the Victim's Mazda, identified as Witness 1, gout out of the Mazda and walked behind the car to get into the passenger side of the Defendant's vehicle. After some time, the Defendant pulled out and drove away. The Victim [NAME REDACTED] into the driver's seat and then the Mazda accelerated quickly in pursuit of the Defendant eastbound on 6th Street.
Both vehicles turned southbound on Marquette Avenue. As the vehicles traveled southbound, Defendant's vehicle stayed in its lane. Victim's vehicle swerved into and crossed into Defendant's lane multiple times. Once they reached the intersection of 10th Street, the vehicles turned left parallel, eastbound onto 10th Street. Just before Ruth's Chris restaurant, the Victim swerved into Defendant's lane again and the vehicles stopped parallel. After a short amount of time, the Defendant vehicle pulled ahead and the Victim [NAME REDACTED]. Both vehicles were next observed stopped parallel while still on 10th Street turning left onto 5th Avenue at a red light.
Witness 2, an uninvolved party, captured a cell phone video while behind the vehicles. Victim, from his driver's open window, reached out and opened the passenger side front door of the Defendant's vehicle. As the Defendant's passenger door swung closed, the barrel and slide portion of a handgun was seen pointed at Defendant and Witness 1 by Victim. Both vehicles then parallel turned left onto 5th Street. Both vehicles came to a stop on the left-hand side of the one-way road parked parallel, with Defendant's vehicle on the left and Victim's vehicle on the right.
