On May 26, 2025, at approximately 9:26 A.M., officers were dispatched to a residence located in Brooklyn Center, Hennepin County, Minnesota, based on a report of a domestic assault. Officers arrived and were met by several distraught bystanders standing outside of the residence. Officers went inside and located an adult female, identified herein as "Victim," laying on the kitchen floor, which was covered with blood. Officers checked the residence but were unable to locate the male suspect, identified as QUENTELL LAMONT POWELL [DOB REDACTED]. Officers attempted to secure the scene and determine what had occurred.
They learned that while Victim [NAME REDACTED], she was not bleeding significantly, and the blood in the kitchen area may have belonged to the suspect. POWELL's sister (identified herein as "Witness") was one of the bystanders on scene. She told police that she had arrived at the residence and was banging on the door and windows but did not get an answer. Victim [NAME REDACTED] was trying to do the same. Witness stated that as soon as the door to the residence opened, Victim flew into a wall. The door then closed behind her, and Witness was locked out.
Witness kept banging on the door to try and get Victim's three children out of the residence. Witness heard Victim screaming. Eventually, POWELL gave Witness her two nieces but not her nephew. Witness continued to bang on the door while others called 911. A maintenance worker arrived and opened the front door, at which point Witness retrieved her nephew and saw POWELL flee out the back door. Victim [NAME REDACTED] on the ground in the kitchen. Police confirmed that the three children, ages 8, 6, and 3, were in Witness's car.
They were physically unharmed but emotionally upset. After Victim [NAME REDACTED], an officer took a statement from her. Victim stated that her mother and POWELL's mother had both received text messages from him stating that he had slit his wrists and went to the hospital, leaving their three children alone in the residence. Victim immediately came to the residence, and when she arrived other family members were already there trying to get POWELL to come out of the residence. POWELL had put a knife in the door to prevent Victim [NAME REDACTED], but eventually she was able to open the door.
When she got in, POWELL immediately started assaulting her and stating that he was going to kill her. Victim reported that POWELL threw her around the kitchen, punched her with a closed fist five to six times, and hit her with a broomstick numerous times. Victim stated that POWELL hit her with the handle of a large knife approximately 10 times. She believed POWELL may have cut his wrist while he was doing this. At one point during the assault, POWELL pulled her pants and underwear off and digitally penetrated her vagina with two of his fingers while telling her he was going to kill her.
