On May 14, 2025, at 1:50 PM, law enforcement was dispatched to the intersection of Highway 95 and 70th Street in Denmark Township, Washington County, Minnesota, after receiving a complaint that a semitruck had crashed and rolled over. Upon arrival, law enforcement observed a semitruck carrying a trailer on the northeast corner of the intersection. The semi was flipped over and lying on the driver's side. Law enforcement also observed a red pickup truck facing oncoming traffic in the southbound lane of Highway 95. There was also a silver pickup truck that was stopped at the stop sign in the southbound lane of Highway 95. The driver of the red pickup truck was identified as S. J. L. He was unresponsive.
He was removed from the vehicle and transported to the hospital. Medical records revealed S. J. L. Suffered significant injuries including but not limited to multiple neck fractures and a significant skull deformity. S. L. J. Had two cardiac arrests while at the hospital. S. J. L. Died as a result of the injuries at 9:46 AM on May 17, 2025. The driver of the semitruck was identified as GURUSEVAK SINGH, [DOB redacted], "the defendant" herein. He was extricated from the semitruck. He reported that he had been looking at both his phone and a GPS unit that were mounted on the dashboard at the time of crash.
The defendant was read his Miranda rights. He further explained that he had picked up a load five minutes prior to crash and was driving to New York. He had driven the route two weeks prior. The defendant admitted that the crash was his fault because he was looking at maps on both his phone and GPS unit. He estimated that he was traveling at approximately 25-30 miles per hour (mph) on Highway 95 when he saw the stop sign. The defendant reported that he could not stop the truck prior to entering the intersection.
Law enforcement collected and searched the defendant's cell phone. The records revealed that his phone screen was active from 1:32 PM to 1:51 PM. The Google Maps application was used at 1:35 PM, 1:45 PM, 1:46 PM, and 1:49 PM. The defendant accessed TruckerProPath.com at 1:49 PM. He placed an outgoing call at 1:46 PM that ended at 1:49 PM. The defendant then called 911 at 1:50 PM. Officers spoke with the driver of the silver pickup truck, T. A. D. He reported that the red truck was struck by the semitruck as it traveled through the intersection.
T. A. D. Believed that the semi failed to stop at the intersection's stop sign. It appeared to be travelling at a high rate of speed. On May 25, 2025, law enforcement drove the route the defendant took prior to the crash. Law enforcement drove at the posted 55 mph speed limit. It observed that the intersection of Highway 95 and 70th Street was visible with no obstructions over one mile prior to arrival. There were yellow signs on both sides of Highway 95 that stated, "Stop Signs Ahead." The signs were visible 51 seconds prior to the intersection.
