On March 10, 2026, in the city of Rosemount, Dakota County, Minnesota, an off-duty officer noticed a vehicle parked haphazardly on his neighbor’s lawn with its engine running and blinker on. The officer did not recognize the vehicle as belonging to his neighbor and noticed only one person near the vehicle—a man later identified as TANNER JAMES RENKEN [DOB REDACTED]. RENKEN was visibly unsteady and almost stumbled to the ground. Believing RENKEN may be intoxicated or experiencing a medical emergency, the officer called the police.
Once police arrived, they observed that RENKEN was slurring his speech, had watery eyes, and smelled of alcohol. RENKEN became upset with the officers and called the officers slurs. RENKEN denied that the vehicle was his. When asked whether he had drank from a bottle of alcohol inside the vehicle, RENKEN said that he had. When the officer responded that if he drank from the bottle in the vehicle, he must have been inside the vehicle at some point, RENKEN turned and ran away. The officer yelled to RENKEN that he was not free to leave and that he was being detained, but RENKEN kept running and attempted to jump over a fence.
RENKEN was apprehended and his uncooperative behavior intensified. RENKEN threatened to fight officers and called them derogatory names. When RENKEN was being brought to the back of the squad car, he made a gagging sound, turned to one officer, and spit in his face. The spit hit the officer on his right cheek below his right eye.
