There were multiple witnesses to portions of these events. Witnesses One and Two were located in the area of Chicago and Franklin conducting work for an outreach program. Witness One stated that she observed Victim [NAME REDACTED] into a brief verbal argument on the sidewalk and then separate. Witness One reported Victim returned to his van briefly but then came back to her and Witness Two to apologize for the argument and thank them for their ministry. Witnesses One and Two reported that they saw Defendant run to Victim’s van and steal it.
They stated that Victim ran to his van and his dogs and grabbed the driver’s door before Defendant drove off in the van with Victim [NAME REDACTED]. Witness Three was in the area of East 18th Street and Chicago Avenue. Witness Three reported that she heard a loud thud causing her to turn to look and see Victim lying in the street and a white van driving away. Witness Three saw the white van stop briefly, open the driver’s door, and look back at Victim before driving 2 27-CR-26-9578 Filed in District Court State of Minnesota 4/15/2026 off.
Defendant was arrested on April 14, 2026, for this offense and several warrants. Defendant was advised of his rights pursuant to Miranda and admitted to taking Victim’s white van from Chicago and Franklin on April 11. Defendant stated that he did not know Victim. He stated that he was just playing a joke and was going to bring Victim’s vehicle back. Defendant claimed that he did not know that Victim was dragged and killed as a result of him stealing the vehicle. Defendant has prior convictions related to stealing motor vehicles.
This includes a conviction for Receiving Stolen Property from October 2025 wherein Defendant was found driving a stolen vehicle with broken out windows and a peeled steering column. Defendant told the officers that he knew the vehicle had been stolen because it was left running in the middle of the night (27CR2513320). Defendant also has a conviction for Fleeing a Peace Officer from October 2024 wherein he fled on foot from police after being stopped driving a stolen vehicle (27CR2421717).
