The Cross Lake Police Department obtained a DNA sample from the defendant. They also seized cell phones belonging to the defendant. The sample was sent to the MN BCA lab for analysis. The defendant's DNA profile was a match to the headband of the cowboy hat found in the stolen truck. The defendant's DNA profile was also a match to the DNA swabbing taken from the steering wheel of the stolen truck. On February 27, 2026, Sgt. Marks executed a search warrant at the home of the defendant. Keys to the stolen GMC vehicle were at the residence.
A family member said they found the keys near the woodline in the back yard. Sgt. Marks spoke with the defendant who ultimately admitted he was in Cross Lake on November 3/4, 2025. He stated he was "blacked out" and had no memory of what took place. He acknowledged he may have been involved in the theft of the vehicle. 3 18-CR-26-1428 Filed in District Court State of Minnesota 4/20/2026 The Cross Lake Police department conducted a forensic analysis of the defendant's phone. He texted a friend on November 4, 2025, at 11:26 A.M. And stated, "Idk man got blackout drunk last night and did some stupid s***".
