On January 26, 2026, multiple Rochester Police officers responded to the 400 block of Broadway Avenue S, Rochester, Minnesota to a report of two individuals fighting. Ofc. Peterson knocked on an apartment door and announced that it was the police. A male adult, fully identified in police reports and hereinafter referred to as “Victim” opened the door to the apartment. Peterson noted that Victim [NAME REDACTED] from the head. Victim [NAME REDACTED] had assaulted him. The friend was later identified as defendant herein, Sulaiman Yusuf Mohamud [DOB REDACTED]. Victim [NAME REDACTED] had arrived to the apartment around 2000 hours the prior evening, and appeared to be intoxicated.
Victim stated that defendant became aggressive and started yelling “f*** you” at him repeatedly. He stated that defendant hit him in the ribs and in the head, causing the injury observed by officers. Victim stated that defendant pinned him to the floor during the altercation, and that he ran to the bathroom to find safety, but defendant followed him. Victim [NAME REDACTED] attempted to defend himself during the altercation, and admitted to biting defendant in an effort to get away. Victim [NAME REDACTED] had know defendant for approximately two months, and that defendant occasionally helped victim with tasks related to his disability.
Victim identified himself as disabled and stated that his father is his legal guardian. Victim was transported to the hospital for evaluation of his injuries after EMS personnel noted a significant amount of blood on his head and concerns about potential injuries to his ribs. Peterson looked at Victim’s knuckles and didn’t observe any obvious markings. Defendant was apprehended in the apartment and identified himself. Defendant gave a mirandized statement that Victim had punched him while he sat on the couch.
He stated that he got up and punched him back one time. Defendant stated that they both were very drunk, and that he had gone to the bathroom after the assault to call his cousin, but that Victim would not allow him to. Defendant stated that he then called 911. Ofc. Charlton observed defendant to have a cut on his lip, and a bite mark on his arm. Defendant declined evaluation of his injuries by EMS personnel. Defendant provided PBT showing BAC of.177. Victim’s medical records note three lacerations to Victim’s face including a three centimeter cut under Victim’s right eyelid, a twelve millimeter cut on Victim’s forehead, and deep rounded laceration at the top of his head.
Each injury required stitches. The cut under Victim’s eye was noted to potentially extend to the eyelid. PLEASE TAKE NOTICE: YOU MUST APPEAR FOR EVERY COURT HEARING REGARDING THIS CASE.
