On or about June 1, 2026 at approximately 7:21 P.M., officers responded to a report of threats being made towards onsite security at the Franklin light rail station at [ADDRESS REDACTED] East in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The reporting party stated a male was loitering at the platform and refusing to exit. The male argued with security and threatened to shoot security guards. The male was described as a black male wearing a beanie with a black t-shirt, black pants, black shoes, and a black gym bag.
Officers arrived on scene and canvassed the area. A bystander said they had witnessed the incident, and the suspect had boarded the southbound route 22 bus. Officers spoke with the security guards, T. A. (“Victim 1” herein) and H. Y. (“Victim 2” herein). Victim 1 stated he and Victim 2 had approached an uninvolved female at the light rail station and told the female she could not smoke at the station. A male, later identified as KAHEEM GEVONTEZ HAMMICK-WADE (“Defendant” herein) approached and told Victims 1 and 2 that they could not tell the female what to do.
Victims 1 and 2 disengaged with Defendant but, after multiple busses passed without Defendant boarding, Victims 1 and 2 approached Defendant. Victims 1 and 2 informed Defendant that he either had to board a bus or leave, and he could not loiter on the platform. Victim 1 said Defendant threatened to hit Victim 1, approached Victim 1 within an arm’s length, and balled his fist near his waistline. Victim 1 said he started to step backwards, but Defendant kept coming towards him. Victim 1 reported Defendant said, “I’ll pop your ass” as he approached Victim 1. Victim 1 told Defendant he would call police.
While Victim 1 was on the phone, Defendant picked up his bag and began walking northbound on the platform towards Cedar Avenue South. Victim 1 said Defendant turned towards Victim 1 and Victim 2 and said, “I’ll come back and shoot your ass, I got the fire,” while patting his bag with his hand. Victims 1 and 2 immediately believed that gesture implied that Defendant had a firearm. Victim 1 captured a photo of Defendant as he walked away. Victims 1 and 2 told officers on scene that they believed Defendant had the will to carry out his threat.
Both Victims 1 and 2 said they were afraid Defendant might hurt them with a firearm. A Real Time Information Center operator looked at security video and sent a photo of a subject that matched the description of the male given by Victims 1 and 2. The photo provided from the security video matched the photo of the suspect on Victim 1’s phone. Officers boarded the southbound route 22 bus and located Defendant. Officers arrested Defendant. Victims 1 and 2 participated in a show-up. Both Victims 1 and 2 positively identified Defendant as the person who had threatened them.
