At approximately 6 P.M. On or about 4/5/2026, Minneapolis police officers and emergency medical service (EMS) personnel responded to an assault complaint at an apartment building located at [ADDRESS REDACTED], Minneapolis, Hennepin County. Upon arrival, EMS located a 71-year-old male victim [NAME REDACTED] in a supine position on the floor of a common hallway on the 15th floor. Victim [NAME REDACTED], had no pulse, had blood coming from both ears, and had lost control of his bodily functions—all evidence consistent with significant head trauma.
EMS performed life-saving measures, including resuscitation, and Victim regained a pulse before EMS transported him to the hospital. Police reviewed surveillance footage from inside the building. It showed Victim had been holding a laundry basket while arguing with MICHAEL JOSEPH WALKER (Defendant), near the elevator on the 15th floor. Defendant appeared to attempt to walk around Victim [NAME REDACTED] into the elevator when Victim nudged Defendant with his laundry basket. Defendant then punched Victim on the left side of Victim’s face with a closed fist.
Victim immediately dropped his laundry basket and fell to the ground. Defendant then rode the elevator down to the 1st floor lobby. Police identified a security guard who worked at the building, Witness 1, who said they were aware Defendant and Victim [NAME REDACTED]. Witness 1 said they were at the lobby desk when Defendant exited an elevator, reported he "knocked that motherfucker out," and walked outside with his dog. Police arrested Defendant. In a post-Miranda statement, Defendant said that when Victim [NAME REDACTED] into the elevator, he grew frustrated and punched Victim.
Defendant further reported that he and Victim used to be friends but that their relationship soured. Victim has not regained consciousness as of this writing. He remains intubated in the hospital. Following a CT scan, medical providers informed law enforcement that Victim has a low likelihood of recovery from his brain injuries. Medical providers are monitoring Victim [NAME REDACTED], and he is scheduled for additional neurological testing in the coming days, at which point medical providers will have a better idea of the injuries Victim [NAME REDACTED]. Defendant remains in custody.
