On September 20, 2022, TRAYSHOWN ANTON HAIRL [DOB REDACTED] received a departure on a felon in possession of a firearm charge in Ramsey County District Court file ••-CR-••-••••. In July 2023 officers received information about a drug trafficking organization involving multiple people that was active in selling fentanyl pills, methamphetamine, and cocaine. Further investigation in January 2024 led officers to believe Hairl was tied to the distribution network. On March 15, 2024, officers executed a search warrant at an apartment at [ADDRESS REDACTED], St. Paul, Ramsey County.
Hairl was at the apartment when the warrant was executed. Officers recovered a Masterpiece 9mm handgun in a box behind a headboard in the bedroom. The firearm had been stolen out of New Brighton in January 2024. Officers recovered a jacket Hairl wore when he was observed leaving a home associated with the drug trafficking organization. Officers found suitcases with loose coffee grounds inside them. Coffee grounds are used to mask the odor of narcotics in the transportation of drugs. Officers recovered a bag containing a large quantity of white powder inside a refrigerator door in the kitchen.
Hairl was advised of his constitutional rights and agreed to speak with officers. Hairl claimed the gun belonged to his girlfriend’s brother, and he denied his DNA would be on the gun. Hairl denied selling drugs. Hairl said the suitcases belonged to his girlfriend. When shown a photo of him wearing the recovered jacket while carrying one of the recovered suitcases, Hairl asked, “Bro, what the f*** does that have to do with drugs?” When asked about the powder in the refrigerator, Hairl said it belonged to his girlfriend and it was something she put on her lips.
Officers arrested Hairl. Hairl argued when officers attempted to execute a search warrant to collect a DNA sample from him. Hairl only agreed to comply with the warrant when officers agreed to release him from jail instead of keeping him over the weekend. The contents of the bag recovered from the kitchen tested positive for the presence of fentanyl and weighed 234.38 grams. Officers later spoke to Hairl’s girlfriend. She admitted living at the residence with Hairl and owning the two suitcases. She denied knowing anything about Hairl trafficking drugs.
She was hesitant to provide information and was not forthcoming with officers. On October 2, 2024, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension submitted a report on the examination of physical evidence. A swab taken from the handgun recovered in the apartment when Hairl was arrested contained a DNA profile interpreted as a mixture originating from 2 individuals. The major DNA profile matches Hairl. The probability of observing the DNA profile is greater than 100 billion times more likely if a mixture from Hairl and another unknown, unrelated individual is the source than if a mixture of 2 unknown, unrelated individuals is the source.
