That on or about 3/2/2026, at approximately 5:15 P.M., Multiple MPD Officers responded to the vicinity of [ADDRESS REDACTED] North in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, MN on a call and updated dispatch of a black male with braided hair and specified description standing in the street arguing and yelling on a phone while brandishing a black pistol and waiving it around in the street. Upon arrival, they observed the male matching the description standing on the side of the street holding a phone. Officers announced their presence and commanded the man to put his hands up and commanded to him ‘don’t run” as the male suspect began to back peddle.
The male was later identified as being Gilkey, Jeremiah Charles, [DOB REDACTED], Defendant herein. Instead of complying, Defendant began putting his phone in his pocket and then began to run. While running, Defendant slipped and fell, tried to get up while reaching for his mid section. Officers were able to grab ahold of his waist and do a controlled take down. Despite being told he is now under arrest and to give officers his hands, Defendant resisted by actively trying to force himself up off the ground.
Officers continued to struggle to get full control of Defendant to prevent him from using his hands to reach for his gun. As the officers tried to secure Defendant’s hands behind his back, he continued his active resistance by tensing up, push himself upward, kicking and rotating his upper body. When Defendant was finally secured in handcuffs, officers did a protective pat frisk and asked where is the firearm but Defendant denied having one. During the pat down, a hard item felt around Defendant’s waist area.
When asked if the object felt was a gun, Defendant initially denied it was a gun but then admitted it was. Officer then lifted the jacket and section covering Defendant’s waist and observed a camo mixed color handgun wrapped around the jacket’s string. The firearm was removed from Defendant’s waist. The firearm was identified as a Girsan MC 1911 style semi‐automatic pistol, with a loaded magazine. A computer search revealed that Defendant did not have a permit to carry. The gun and magazine were property inventoried.
An EMS was responded to the scene as Defendant complained of hip injury and one of the officers had sustained a visibly bleeding hand injury along with torn uniform pants during the struggle to restrain Defendant. When EMS arrived, Defendant declined medical treatment, so EMS attended to the injured officer’s hands. On scene, Officers confirmed with 911 caller the suspect's description and conduct observed. Defendant was transported to HCJ.
