On June 30, 2025, investigators at the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension received a report of theft by an employee working for the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD), in the City of Minneapolis, County of Hennepin, State of Minnesota. Investigators learned that the employee was Abdirashid Ahmed Ali [DOB REDACTED] and that Ali had been working as a Crime Prevention Specialist. Investigators learned that Ali would routinely log multiple hours of overtime work, claiming to be at neighborhood association meetings that had not actually occurred.
Investigators also learned that beginning on January 16, 2024, Ali started working as a Cultural Liaison with the University of Minnesota Department of Public Safety (UMDPS), with the same job responsibilities as his Crime Prevention Specialist position. Ali never reported his secondary employment to the MPD or City of Minneapolis. Investigators obtained Ali’s timecards from both MPD and UMDPS, which showed that between April 30, 2024, and October 31, 2024, Ali submitted a total of 81 hours of overtime with MPD for time that he was also working in his role at UMDPS. Ali’s overtime rate for this work was $57.75 per hour, with a total payout of $4,677.75. Investigators also identified several recurring overtime submissions for attending meetings with neighborhood associations, and learned that between May 9, 2024, and September 10, 2024, Ali submitted a total of 17 hours of overtime for meetings that either did not occur or where no representative from MPD was present, for a total payout of approximately $981.75. In total, between April 30, 2024, and October 31, 2024, Ali submitted a total of 98 hours of overtime for work with MPD while also working for UMDPS and for community association meetings he did not attend, with a total payout of approximately $5,659.50.
