On December 1, 2025, officers from the Fargo Police Department notified Moorhead Police that they were pursuing a suspected stolen vehicle into Moorhead, Clay County, Minnesota. The vehicle was described as a green Ford Fiesta occupied by a male driver and male passenger. Moorhead Police Officer Hermes located the vehicle and parked her squad car with emergency lights activated. Officer Hermes attempted to deploy stop sticks, but the vehicle accelerated and maneuvered around the stopped squad car.
Officer Hermes was able to observe the driver, who was a white male wearing a brightly collared shirt. Officers pursued the vehicle, but eventually lost sight of it. Officer Oelrich located the vehicle unoccupied near [ADDRESS REDACTED]. A male individual, D. R., surrendered himself to police, and Officer Hermes arrived on scene to speak with him. Officer Hermes confirmed D. R. Was not the individual she had seen driving the vehicle. D. R. Stated the driver was named "Josh Helm." Officer Hermes deployed K9 Gimli to track the driver from the abandoned vehicle.
The track led to a male individual who approached Officer Schlicting. The male was identified as JOSHUA LOUIS EDWIN HELM, [DOB REDACTED], hereinafter "Defendant". Defendant admitted to police that he was the driver of the stolen vehicle. Defendant was arrested and transported to the Clay County Jail. At the Jail, Officer Hermes spoke with Defendant about the incident. Defendant waived his Miranda Rights and admitted to fleeing from Fargo Police. Defendant stated he had received the vehicle from an individual known as J. P.M. Defendant stated he suspected the vehicle was stolen and that J. P.M. Had told him the vehicle was stolen.
