On January 29, 2026, at approximately 6:05 A.M., Deputy Meyer of the Mower County Sheriff’s Office was travelling eastbound on Highway 56 at 790th Avenue in the County of Mower, when he observed a lone 2014 Kia Sorento (MN LIC/KHE448) traveling ahead of him in the same direction. Meyer observed the vehicle cross over the fog and center lines multiple times in less than a mile of roadway. Meyer caught up to the vehicle as it entered Fillmore County. Meyer activated his emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop.
Deputy Meyer approached the vehicle and contacted the lone driver, MONTANA BLUE SMITH, DOB/021988, the defendant herein. Meyer explained the reason for the stop and asked the defendant for proof of insurance. The defendant advised that the vehicle did not have insurance. While speaking with the defendant, Meyer observed her to have dilated and slow reactive pupils and twitching hands. Meyer also smelled the faint chemical odor of methamphetamine. Deputy Meyer then asked the defendant to perform field sobriety tests.
The defendant became upset and said she was fine. Meyer asked the defendant a few more times and the defendant continued to say that she was fine and it was cold out. The defendant declined field sobriety tests. Deputy Meyer placed the defendant under arrest. As the defendant was being placed in the squad car, she admitted she had drugs in her system. The defendant then stated that she had methamphetamine in her coat. Meyer retrieved a small red bag containing suspected methamphetamine. The substance was later sent to the BCA laboratory for analysis.
Analysis of the substance indicated the presence of methamphetamine and weighed 0.47 grams. At the jail, Deputy Meyer applied for and was granted a search warrant for a sample of the defendant’s blood or urine. Meyer provided the warrant to the defendant and advised her that refusal to submit to a chemical test is a crime. The defendant agreed to provide a urine sample (kit#U252383). The sample was sent to the BCA laboratory for analysis. The defendant was released pending results. On April 2, 2026, Deputy Meyer received the results of the defendant’s urine test from the BCA laboratory.
Analysis revealed the presence of amphetamine and methamphetamine.
