On August 14, 2025, officers stopped a vehicle with expired registration at the intersection of Golden Valley Road and Girard Avenue North, in the City of Minneapolis, County of Hennepin, State of Minnesota. During the stop, officers spoke with the occupants and observed a burnt marijuana cigarette in the cupholder of the vehicle. The driver was identified as Devon Rayshawn Jones [DOB REDACTED], Defendant herein. Officers removed the front seat passenger from the vehicle as well and located a firearm in the passenger’s waistband.
Officers secured the firearm, a loaded silver Smith and Wesson revolver. During a search of the vehicle officers located a second firearm, a Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun underneath the front passenger seat. In addition, officers located a backpack behind that passenger seat that contained a digital scale and several containers with apparent marijuana residue inside. Officers obtained a search warrant for both occupants’ DNA and submitted the Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun for forensic analysis. The crime lab returned reports indicating the DNA mixture profile was a mixture of three individuals, with the main profile of the Defendant, Devon Jones.
The DNA mixture did not match the profile obtained from the occupant in the passenger seat of the vehicle. Officers neither occupant of the vehicle had permits to carry firearms. The Defendant is prohibited from possessing firearms as a result of a prior conviction of First Degree Burglary in Court file number ••-CR-••-••••, a crime of violence. The Defendant also has a previous Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm Conviction from court file number ••-CR-••-••••. The Defendant is not currently in custody.
The State requests the complaint be issued by warrant as the State has concerns for public safety as the Defendant continues to possess firearms when prohibited and the delay in charging was solely due to forensic testing.
