On or about May 31, 2026, at approximately 7:16 P.M., Minneapolis police officers responded to an apartment complex on the 1200 block of Glenwood Avenue North in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, upon reports of a person in crisis banging on residents’ doors and trespassing into residents’ apartment units. Reports indicated the suspect was on the fourth floor of the building. Officers arrived on scene and spoke with J. P. (“Witness 1” herein). Witness 1 told officers that a female, later identified as SHANTELLE DANYELLE DIVINE (“Defendant” herein), was inside the complex, and she had damaged Witness 1’s door and broken a lamp inside of a unit on the fourth floor.
Officers went up to the fourth floor and immediately started coughing due to “pepper spray” that another witness had used against Defendant. Officers observed Defendant standing in the doorway of a unit. Officers ordered Defendant to go out into the hallway to speak with officers, but she refused and instead retreated further into the apartment unit. Officers asked Witness 1 who had been responsible for the disturbances, and he said, “the one in shorts.” Defendant was the only person in the immediate area wearing shorts.
Other residents nearby reported Defendant was swinging a large metal pole at doors and charging at residents. Officers informed Defendant she was under arrest, but Defendant retreated into her unit’s bathroom as a bystander, later identified as Defendant’s mother, J. F., physically interfered with officers’ attempts to enter the unit. Upon successful entry into the unit, officers grabbed Defendant’s arms, and Defendant physically resisted arrest by pulling away from officers and using her body weight to drop to the ground.
During the struggle, Defendant kicked Officer A. G. (“Victim 1” herein) in the groin area. Defendant kicked and scratched at officers while they attempted to handcuff her. Defendant grabbed a door frame in an attempt to avoid arrest. Defendant also grabbed at officers’ vests. Eventually, officers were able to handcuff Defendant. Officers had to carry Defendant to a squad car, as she continued to resist and refused to walk to the car. After Defendant was secured in the squad car, officers spoke with Witness 1. Witness 1 said he had arrived home to the apartment complex at approximately 6:44 P.M., and he heard Defendant repeatedly yelling “faggot” into the hallway.
Witness 1 said he believed the yelling was directed at him due to his sexual orientation. Witness 1 said Defendant banged on his apartment unit door, causing damage. Witness 1 said he opened the door and Defendant looked directly at him and called him a “faggot” twice. Officers also spoke with D. A. (“Victim 2” herein). Victim 2 said that between 7:00 P.M. To 7:15 P.M., Defendant placed duct tape over the peepholes of several apartment doors, and Defendant was “beating” the doors with a lamp. Victim 2 said this is a frequent issue with Defendant.
