A day earlier, the vehicle's owner parked the vehicle and left the keys in a nearby mailbox.
CCTV footage showed a suspect matching MCKINNIE's description rifling the mailbox. This case is still active. Current offense: On 12/22/2025 at about 0942 hours, St. Paul Police responded to Alaska Ave/Race St in St. Paul, Ramsey County for a report of a stolen vehicle that had been spotted there. Upon arrival, police saw a black male slumped over in the driver’s seat of the stolen 2025 black Kia Telluride (CO/DWZJ07). The vehicle had been reported stolen from Avis Budget Rental Car company, ([ADDRESS REDACTED], Minneapolis). The value of the vehicle exceeded $5,000. Police blocked the vehicle in and used the squad’s air horn to get the driver’s attention.
The driver was taken into custody and identified as Danya Mandrell MCKINNIE ([DOB REDACTED]). Through their investigation, police determined that on 12/14/25 “AM” rented the vehicle from “BUDGET.” On 12-20-2025, at about 1554 hours, AM drove the vehicle to BUDGET to return it, but BUDGET was closed. While AM was in the parking lot, a vagrant male, later identified as MCKINNIE, approached him and said he was a BUDGET employee. After the two spoke AM left the vehicle parked in the lot with the keys on the dashboard.
Then, at about 2036 hours, MCKINNIE got into the vehicle and drove away. BUDGET CCTV footage and an AVIS employee, AH, confirmed these events. AH also told police that he recognized the vagrant male suspect from previous incidents where the male was trespassing in their parking lot. Finally, AH said that on 12/20/25 he paid the vagrant male suspect $5 to clean out a storage container on the property. In a post-Miranda interview, MCKINNIE admitted being at BUDGET on 12/20/25. He said that he worked “with” BUDGET cleaning and organizing and had a “shipping container” there that he used to store his belongings.
He said that on 12/20/25 he was there cleaning out his storage container and a man he knew only as “REGGIE” pulled up driving the vehicle. When asked if REGGIE gave him the car, MCKINNIE said “and I drove it to my mom’s house” to shower and get clean clothes. MCKINNIE admitted that he had been in possession of the vehicle for several days and that all his belongings were in the car. He said that on 12/21/25 he drove to see his mother in Chanhassen and that he drove the vehicle to get food, and also drove it to St. Paul.
