On March 9, 2026, Minneapolis Police Department Officers were dispatched to a burglary in progress call for an apartment on the 2400 block of 17th Avenue South in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Officers arrived and found Ira Bailey [DOB REDACTED], "Defendant" herein, exiting out victim's apartment carrying a black bicycle handle. The door to Victim's unit had visible signs of forced entry to include damage to the door and doorframe. This damage resulted in portions of the door frame being scattered on the kitchen floor of the apartment.
Additionally, the location where the deadbolt would normally be on the door/doorframe was completely removed. An estimate to repair/replace the damage was obtained and amounted to approximately $3,273.79. Officers spoke with a witness who reported hearing a loud banging noise coming from upstairs at the apartment complex. When the witness went upstairs, they observed Defendant holding a black bicycle handlebar in his hands. The witness asked Defendant what he was doing, to which Defendant noted that somebody owed him money inside the unit.
Defendant noted the witness should mind his business. The witness then walked away and called 911. In a post-Miranda statement, Defendant admitted to forcing entry into the apartment unit by breaking the door with his metal bar. Defendant is currently in custody. The State has public safety concerns based on the nature of this offense paired with the nature of the offense Defendant is currently under DOC supervision for (Burglary 1 conviction in court file number 60-CR-18-2364). Accordingly, the State is requesting higher bail for this case.
