On January 20, 2026, at approximately 1140 hours, law enforcement was alerted to a black BMW sedan with MN license plate [PLATE REDACTED], in which the registered owner’s driver's license had the status of cancelled inimical to public safety. Law enforcement observed a man, later identified as Shaun Doyle Alexander, [DOB REDACTED] (Defendant herein), standing next to the black BMW sedan at a gas station in Hopkins, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The Defendant matched the driver’s license picture of the registered owner of the black BMW sedan.
The Defendant got into the black BMW sedan and drove away. Law enforcement followed the Defendant and observed the Defendant turn left onto Westbound Highway 7 from the incorrect lane. While doing so, the Defendant cut off another driver. Law enforcement activated their emergency lights and attempted to stop the Defendant. The Defendant slowed to 20 mph but continued driving. Law enforcement got in front of the Defendant to stop him from driving. Law enforcement approached the vehicle, and the Defendant was in the driver’s seat and the sole occupant of the vehicle.
The Defendant was asked to step out of the vehicle and was placed under arrest for driving with a canceled license - inimical to public safety. While speaking to the Defendant, law enforcement observed the Defendant to be lethargic, and he had slurred speech, red/glossy eyes, and poor balance. Law enforcement noticed the Defendant had “droopy” eyes as if he couldn’t keep them open all the way. While searching the Defendant incident to arrest, law enforcement located pill bottles with the labels of pregabalin (a schedule V controlled substance) and clonazepam (a schedule IV controlled substance) in the Defendant’s pants pocket.
Both drugs can cause drowsiness, poor coordination, and concentration issues. The Defendant agreed to perform standardized field sobriety tests. During the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, the Defendant exhibited 4 out 6 clues of impairment. Next, the Defendant performed the walk and turn test. During this test, the Defendant showed several signs of impairment. The Defendant missed several heel-to-toe steps, stepped off the line while walking, and used his arms for balance. During the one-legged stand test, the Defendant showed multiple signs of impairment.
The Defendant swayed for balance, put his foot down to the ground multiple times, and used his arms for balance. Law enforcement noted the Defendant had an exceptionally difficult time performing this test, as the Defendant’s balance was very poor to the point where law enforcement ended the test because they thought the Defendant might fall and injure himself. A search warrant was obtained for a sample of the Defendant’s blood. At 1422 hours, the blood draw was completed. Results of the blood draw are pending.
