Officer Pedersen followed the vehicle, observing the vehicle’s license plate as Colorado BVHH27. Officer Pedersen observed the vehicle turn north on York Avenue, against the solid red light, without stopping.
Officer Pedersen activated the squad car’s emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop of the vehicle. Officer Pedersen approached the vehicle and spoke with the driver, later identified as Ethan Garrett Naranjo, [DOB REDACTED], the Defendant herein. Officer Pedersen observed the Defendant’s Arizona driver’s license. The Defendant stated to Officer Pedersen “in full transparency, I have a gun under my seat.” The Defendant admitted he does not have a permit to carry a gun. The Defendant was asked to exit the vehicle and was frisked for weapons.
The Defendant stated the gun belonged to him and he was unaware he needed a permit to carry a gun in the State of Minnesota. Officer Pedersen placed gloves on his hands and retrieved a black zippered gun case from under the driver’s seat. Officer Pedersen observed the gun to be a 9mm pistol, serial #CV005527, with a fully seated magazine. Officer Pedersen observed the magazine contained seven 9mm cartridges. Officer Pedersen secured the gun. Officer Pedersen searched the remainder of the vehicle and located two boxes of 9mm cartridges.
The Defendant was placed under arrest, searched, placed in a squad car, and transported to the Edina Police Department for booking. Officer Pedersen read the Defendant his Miranda Rights, which he stated he understood and did not wish to provide a statement. The Defendant was released from the Edina Police Department lobby. A review of the Defendant’s record reveals he does not possess a permit to carry.
