On July 28, 2025, Columbia Heights Police were dispatched to [ADDRESS REDACTED] NE in Anoka County on a report of a possible home invasion. The caller reported that they saw someone inside their home that they did not recognize, and police responded immediately. The intruder was identified as Defendant Christopher Edward Hughes ([DOB REDACTED]), who exited the residence without incident but appeared to be under the influence. Defendant stated that he lived at the residence, but then became confused and stated, "This isn't Stinson" (a street approximately 9 blocks away). Defendant apologized and stated that he had recently relapsed on methamphetamine, and had mistakenly thought that this was his residence.
Officers asked if he had additional contraband on him, and Defendant produced a baggie with a crystal substance that he identified as methamphetamine. Defendant was then placed under arrest for drug possession, after the homeowner declined to pursue charges. In a search incident to arrest, officers found a container in Defendant's clothing that contained 92 pills later identified as Xanax. In Defendant's backpack, a large number of different substances were found, and the items were sent in for testing.
Lab results confirmed that Defendant's backpack and clothing contained the following substances: - 81 pills of phenazolam in a non-pharmaceutical preparation (not currently a controlled substance) - 92 pills of Alprazolam (Xanax, pursuant to a prescription) - 7 pills of buprenorphine (suboxone, pursuant to a prescription) - 23 pills of amphetamines, some in capsules and some in tablets (partially pursuant to a prescription) - 3.408 grams of methamphetamine in the baggie that Defendant produced.
