On 09/30/2025, Maplewood Police responded to U-Haul at [ADDRESS REDACTED], in Maplewood, Ramsey County. The U-Haul manager, GJM, said he had been contacted by "JAC" who told him that on 9/16/25 someone stole his driver’s license and – that same day –used the stolen DL to fraudulently rent a 2013 Ford Econoline van (AZ/ AE82333) from U-Haul. GJM also said that Minneapolis Police had contacted him and told him that a KOPS alert had been issued for the van becausei t had been used in several thefts in that city.
U-Haul CCTV footage showed the suspect who used JAC’s ID to rent the van on 9/16/25. According to the rental contract that the suspect signed as “JAC,” the van was supposed to be returned the following day; on 9/17/25. The van had never been returned. The value of the van exceeded $5,000. Maplewood police reviewed the U-Haul CCTV footage and confirmed that the suspect renting the van was not JAC. The suspect was a white male with short hair and a beard and distinctive tattoos on his left arm. The suspect was later positively identified as Mitchell James OMODT [DOB REDACTED]. During the course of Maplewood’s investigation, the investigator learned that OMODT was also the suspect in numerous burglary and stolen property crimes that occurred on or about 9/18/25. These crimes were investigated by Hopkin Police.
Hopkins Police had collected significant evidence that OMODT used the stolen van in those crimes and had photographs showing OMODT in possession of the van. The Maplewood investigator also learned that on 09/20/2025 OMODT was arrested by the Prairie Island Police. At that time, OMODT was in possession of the stolen van and in possession of methamphetamine. During that arrest, OMODT falsely identified himself to police as JAC and presented JAC’s stolen DL to police. The Maplewood investigator compared the U-Haul CCTV images with images of OMODT from numerous sources, including DVS, MRAP, and Facebook, and positively identified him as the suspect in the theft of the U-Haul van.
