Mooney heard honking, went outside, and called 911. She heard multiple gunshots, and she saw a car at the end of the alley. Mooney denied she had a gun or shot at the vehicle. Investigators told Mooney they found casings 2 62-CR-26-1412 Filed in District Court State of Minnesota 3/2/2026 where she had been standing and had recovered a handgun from a paper shredder inside her apartment, so it was time to be honest. Mooney said she wasn’t the only one there. A guy who goes by X came out with her when she called 911. He fired the gun and hid it in her apartment.
He left before police got there. Mooney didn’t know his real name – he just sleeps in the apartment building hallway sometimes. Mooney’s daughter wasn’t home, so she invited X in, and they smoked weed. Mooney denied the recovered gun was hers. She didn’t see him hide the gun before he left. When asked if her DNA would be on the gun, Mooney said it probably would because she held the gun a week earlier. Mooney did not know if anyone in the vehicle had fired back. Mooney has 3 prior felony convictions: identity theft, motor vehicle theft, and VOCSL 5 in Dakota County District Court file 19HA-CR-17-4690. Mooney initially received a stay of adjudication on the charge, but a stay of imposition was later imposed, and Mooney was convicted.
The drug conviction makes Mooney ineligible to possess firearms or ammunition. On October 9, 2025, Mooney was sentenced on a gross misdemeanor possession of a pistol without a permit in Carlton County District Court file 09-CR-24-1221. Mooney committed this offense while charged with assault in the second degree in Dakota County District Court file 19HA-CR-24-594.
