On or about April 7, 2026 at approximately 3:59 A.M., Minneapolis officers responded to a call for a burglary of a dwelling on the 1000 block of 20th Avenue Northeast in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The reporting party, C. B. (“Witness” herein) stated that an unwanted male broke into his mother’s home. Witness stated his mother, R. L. (“Victim” herein) was 82 years old, and she had activated her emergency medical alert device, which notified Witness of a medical emergency. Witness, who lives a few houses away, walked down to Victim’s home and found that the back door had been broken in.
Victim told Witness she did not need medical attention, but she had pressed her alert button because she woke up at approximately 3:45 A.M. And saw an unidentified male in her bedroom. Officers arrived at the home and saw a male, later identified as ISMAIL MAWLID ALI (“Defendant” herein) standing in the home’s doorway. Defendant was speaking frantically, walking back and forth, and reaching in his pockets. Officers detained Defendant. Defendant continued ranting about how people were after him, how he was assaulted and stabbed, and how someone was trying to get him.
Officers did not observe any stab wounds, blood, or other visible injuries on Defendant. Defendant was unable to answer officers’ questions. Defendant had trouble standing on his own and needed to be held up by officers to avoid falling. Officers spoke with Witness and Victim. Victim stated she was asleep in her bedroom when she woke up to see Defendant standing over her. Witness and Victim told officers that it appeared Defendant gained entry into the home by kicking in a rear door. Officers observed extensive damage to the rear doorframe and surrounding drywall.
Neither Witness nor Victim knew Defendant, and Defendant did not have permission to be in Victim’s home. Victim told officers that nothing other than the doorframe and drywall appeared to be damaged. Victim told officers that nothing appeared to be missing, but there were some cans scattered across the floor, and it appeared as though Defendant ate some of Victim’s canned food while in the home. Based on Defendant’s erratic behavior, he was transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center. Defendant was released once cleared by medical staff.
