On March 19, 2026, at 3:25 A.M., deputies from the Wright County Sheriff's Office responded to a residence in Chatham Township, Wright County, Minnesota, for a domestic disturbance. A male, identified as D. T., was in the driveway. D. T. Reported the following: D. T. Lives at the residence, a split-level home; D. T. Was sleeping on the couch on the upper level; D. T. Heard what sounded like glass breaking downstairs, then noticed Charity Tina Degroat [DOB REDACTED], hereinafter Defendant, at the top of the stairs; D. T. And Defendant were in a romantic relationship for the past eight months; D. T. Had been trying to leave the relationship in the past week due to Defendant's mental health diagnoses and issues; Defendant did not live with D. T. And had not stayed with D. T. For more than a couple of days at a time at points in the relationship; D. T. Was surprised to see Defendant in the house, as she was not invited over at that time; Defendant yelled at D. T. About their relationship and was yelling things that did not make sense, indicating a mental health episode; D. T. Tried to calm Defendant and did not raise his voice; While Defendant was yelling at D. T., Defendant said she would stab D. T. And slit her own throat; D. T. Did not see a knife; however, Defendant's hands were in her jacket, implicating possession of a knife; Defendant was scared he may be stabbed and tried to keep his distance from Defendant before getting Defendant to calm down and accept a ride home; During the ride Defendant leaned over the center console, with her hand in her jacket, and asked D. T. If he wanted to get stabbed or wanted to see Defendant slit her own throat; Defendant was scared of getting stabbed and returned to his home to extricate himself from the situation as quickly as possible, as his home was closer at that point; Once he returned home, D. T. Exited his vehicle and called 911; Defendant went back into D. T.'s home through a broken window on the lower level.
Deputy Preusse observed a broken window on the lower level of the home. A backpack with female clothing was on the front doorstep. The backpack contained 0.9 grams of a substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine, a Schedule II controlled substance. D. T. Reported the backpack belonged to Defendant. Deputy Weekes spoke with Defendant. Defendant reported the following: A friend gave Defendant a ride to D. T.'s residence; Defendant kicked in a window and entered D. T.'s residence; Defendant claimed she previously entered the home in this manner and had permission to do so; Defendant found D. T. On the couch; D. T. Woke up and the two went to a Holiday gas station.
When asked if the incident became physical, Defendant claimed D. T. Kicked Defendant. Defendant said she did not know anything about the use of a knife. Defendant refused to explain how and where she was kicked or to provide other details. Defendant said that whatever D. T. Said happened, that is what happened.
