On July 2, 2025 at approximately 6:59 P.M., Austin Police Department officers were dispatched to a home in the 700 block of 37'" Street SW in the City of Austin, County of Mower, for a report of a physical domestic assault. Austin Police Department Officers Brady Johnson and Ted Sherwood arrived on scene, and Officer Johnson spoke with Victim A (an adult female). Victim A told Officer Johnson that she and her boyfriend, JOSHUA SCOTT SEXTER, [DOB REDACTED], hereinafter the defendant, have lived together for three and a half years in Owatonna, and they have a two-year old daughter together.
Victim A also advised that she is pregnant with the defendant's child. While speaking with Victim A, Victim A was able to track the defendant's location through the Find my iPhone feature. It showed the defendant was at the basketball courts across the street from Marcussen Park. Officer Sherwood went to his location to speak with the defendant. Victim A stated she and the defendant began to argue around 3:30 P.M. That day, and the defendant eventually left to play basketball at a park. The defendant returned to the home around 4:00 P.M., and while Victim A was lying on the floor with their two-year old child, [NAME REDACTED] on top of Victim A. Victim A told him approximately 6 times to get up, and eventually she just got up and walked to her mother's bedroom.
The defendant followed her, and Victim A told him to leave her alone, but he would not leave. Victim A said she turned her back to the defendant, and the defendant shoved her in the shoulder blade area. The defendant then grabbed her cell phone from her and began walking back to the living room. Victim A followed, tried to get her cell phone back, but eventually gave up and went back to her mother's bedroom. Victim A told Officer Johnson that she was standing in the corner of the room when the defendant returned.
The defendant shoved her in the chest with both hands, causing Victim A to land on the bed. At this time, their two-year old daughter walked into the room, and the defendant left. Victim A locked the bedroom door, leaving her and her daughter in the bedroom. Approximately 10 minutes later, the defendant began banging on the door, yelling, and stating he wanted to say goodbye to their daughter. Victim A let the defendant into the room, and when her back was turned to him, he began to choke Victim A using a "rear-naked choke hold." Victim A said it lasted approximately 5 seconds and she was unable to breathe.
Victim A estimated the grip of the choke hold to be an "8." Victim A said she pinched the defendant's arm, and he let go. Victim A then walked into the living room, and the defendant followed. Her. Victim A said she sat on the couch, and the defendant began shoving his body into her while yelling in her face. Victim A returned to her mother's bedroom, and the defendant again followed her. Once in the bedroom, the defendant once again choked her, again putting her into a "rear-naked choke hold." Victim A said that also lasted approximately 5 seconds, and his grip was an "8." Victim A again was able to get the defendant to release his grip by pinching his arm.
