On December 16, 2025, at approximately 12:53 A.M., officers on routine patrol in the area of University Avenue and Lexington Parkway in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota, observed a white sedan with an Arizona license plate commit several traffic infractions. The sedan then took a wide turn and appeared to cross over the lane divider into oncoming traffic. The sedan swerved over road markings and again went into oncoming traffic before moving back into its lane. The sedan turned westbound on Charles Avenue and began swerving, nearly colliding with a parked car.
The vehicle pulled over to the right side of the road and parked poorly. The officer activated the squad’s overhead emergency lights and approached the vehicle on foot on the driver’s side. As the officer neared the rear driver’s side window, the officer observed the driver, later identified as DEREK DAVIS GOODE – [DOB REDACTED], make furtive movements with his right hand. GOODE was reaching into the backseat and pulled off the rear facing plastic for the center console. GOODE then briefly moved his right hand in front of him, out of sight, before returning it near the center console area with what appeared to be a black semiautomatic handgun.
The officer drew their handgun and gave him verbal commands to show his hands. GOODE quickly placed the handgun in the center console and put his left hand out the window. The officer directed GOODE to turn off his vehicle, but he accelerated and fled. The officer turned off the squad’s emergency lights and followed GOODE as he fled. GOODE extinguished the vehicle’s headlights shortly after he fled, which caused an increased hazard for other drivers and pedestrians. GOODE turned into an alley, and the officer lost sight of the vehicle.
St. Paul Police, with the assistance of the Minnesota State Patrol helicopter, pursued the vehicle. Eventually, the helicopter advised that GOODE pulled into the alley parking for [ADDRESS REDACTED] and was fleeing on foot. Officers pursued GOODE and were able to catch him. GOODE resisted and fought with police as they attempted to take him into custody. Eventually, police were able to get him in handcuffs, but GOODE continued to resist, which resulted in several officers receiving minor [NAME REDACTED]. Police noted a strong odor of a consumed alcoholic beverage coming from GOODE. In a search incident to arrest, police located multiple bags of suspected narcotics, a black digital scale, and $820 in cash.
In a search of GOODE’s vehicle, police located a black Glock 43 located inside the center console where the officer observed GOODE attempt to hide it. The firearm’s magazine was loaded and there was a round in the chamber. In addition, there was a bottle of tequila and an empty juice bottle underneath the driver’s seat. Notably, the vehicle lacked an ignition interlock, which is a requirement of GOODE’s driving privileges. Medics responded to the scene to treat GOODE’s injuries. GOODE was then transported to Regions Hospital for further evaluation, but he refused medical treatment.
