The state fire marshal collected evidence and confirmed that gas had been used as an accelerant during the arson. A KOPS Alert was issued for CHAM. On 12/16/25, a Maplewood detective talked with CHAM’s father who confirmed that CHAM had been staying at an apartment on the second of [ADDRESS REDACTED] and provided police a valid phone number for him. Pursuant to a search warrant, police obtained cell phone ping records for the phone. Among other things, the records showed that on 12/16/25 at about 0940 hours, CHAM’s phone was near [ADDRESS REDACTED] E and at 2 62-CR-25-9434 Filed in District Court State of Minnesota 12/19/2025 0954 hours it was northwest of the address, which is the same direction the arson suspect was seen fleeing.
On 12/18/25, police spoke to a juvenile (17 yo) family member in apartment 2xx, MAS, who said that a day before the arson, his mother received a threatening Instagram message from CHAM. The message taunted her, asked her where ILS was, and said he was going to come “play” with him. MAS said the whole family was in fear of CHAM. On 12/18/25, Police made contact with CHAM by telephone and arranged to meet with him at his father’s house. Once there, CHAM was arrested. During a post-Miranda interview, CHAM was uncooperative.
He said that had been staying with a “friend” in “St. Paul,” but denied ever having been in Maplewood, and denied having any social media. When told that he was being arrested for arson and attempted murder he showed no emotion, no shock or surprise, and only responded with “That’s understandable.
