A St. Cloud Police Department investigator was investigating a financial-related offense when he was contacted in July 2025, by Gate City Bank about a transaction involving MARQUIS DWAYNE JOHNSON, [DOB REDACTED], the defendant. The bank sent the investigator a video from the bank located in Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Minnesota, that showed a male who appeared to match the defendant's Minnesota Identification photograph. The video showed that on or about May 28, 2025, this male deposited a check in the amount of $4,928.61 into his account.
During the transaction, the defendant endorsed the back of the check. The signature on the Home Care LLC check was similar to the signature on the defendant's Minnesota Identification, but was not identical. After completing that transaction, $100 was withdrawn from the defendant's account through the cash application. The check passed by the male believed to be the defendant was listed by the bank as an "RDI Check," or in other words a returned deposited item. The check was returned, as it was identified as being altered/fictitious.
Further review of the check showed it was identified in the top left corner as belonging to a Home Care LLC in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, when the actual address of the listed entity was in Hopkins, Minnesota. Recovery Home Care advised the check at issue was fraudulent and the owner had not written the check passed by the defendant. The defendant's bank account agreement from March 10, 2025, listed the defendant's Minnetonka address. The defendant's account contained $8.83 before he deposited the RDI check, so after his $100 cash withdrawal, he had a balance of negative $91.14. When the defendant later spoke with an investigator, he claimed he had received the check from his cousin.
The defendant said he received the check because he had done some work. PLEASE TAKE NOTICE: Pursuant to Minn. Stat. 609.49, intentional failure to appear for duly scheduled court appearances may result in additional criminal charges, and in addition to any arrest warrant that may otherwise be issued by the Court.
