On March 23, 2026, at approximately 10:17 P.M., Sergeant Matt Grossell of the Itasca County Sheriff's Office was dispatched in regard to a call for service at the Itasca County Jail. It was reported that Lucas Alan Woodward, an inmate in the jail, had committed damage to property. Upon entering the jail, said sergeant spoke with jail sergeant, Erin Nelson, who indicated that the last time a similar glass window in a jail cell was broken it cost approximately $3,700.00 to replace. Said sergeant was escorted to Cell "November" (a negative pressure cell) where he observed that the window in cell #2 had a crack in the glass approximately the size of a half dollar.
Woodward had been housed in cell #2 at the time of the incident, but had since been relocated. Jail staff had used chemical agents against Woodward in cell #2. Sergeant Grossell then entered Woodward's new cell and read him the Miranda advisory. He agreed to speak with said sergeant. He stated that he got angry and threw his jail texter at the window two (2) times. He also stated that his father had recently passed away. Woodward was mumbling severely and was difficult to understand. A record check revealed that Woodward has the following criminal convictions: 06-28-2018: DWI, misdemeanor, Hubbard County; 11-22-2016: Fifth Degree Assault, misdemeanor, Beltrami County; 10-03-2016: False Name and Date of Birth to a Peace Office, gross misdemeanor, Cass County; 06-20-2011: Escape from Custody, felony, Cass County; 06-09-2011: Domestic Assault, misdemeanor, Cass County; 06-20-2011: Fifth Degree Controlled Substance Possession, felony, Cass County; 10-27-2008: Theft by Swindle, felony, Cass County; 06-20-2011: Fifth Degree Controlled Substance Possession, felony, Cass County.
